Over a decade ago, I remember picking up my first Harry Potter book. Ever since then, I’ve been engrossed in this world of witchcraft and wizardry. 10 years ago, I remember being skeptical as I watched the first movie, thinking that it could never do the book justice. It was also when I found out that the headmaster’s name was pronounced Dum-ul-dore and not Dum-leh-dore. 4 years ago, I forced myself to stay off the internet to avoid any spoilers about the 7th and final book. And now, in only a few short hours, all of it is going to end.
To me, Harry Potter isn’t just a collection of books and movies, it’s been my childhood. I don’t mean it in the way that I re-read the books 40 times over, concocted my own potions, and shouted spells at people when I was younger. It’s been my childhood because I grew up always looking forward to either the next book or movie. It’s one of the few things that have been constant in my life, so trying to face the reality that Harry Potter will cease to continue is…difficult, to say the least. In a way, the final chapter of Harry’s adventures can be compared to the final chapters of my childhood. As Voldemort and Harry duel for the fate of the wizarding world, I am about to leave the place that I have called home for 18 years to live off on my own in college. It’s only fitting that since we started this together, we will end this together.
I may not be wearing a robe when I’m watching the midnight premiere nor will I be clutching a wand as the credits start to roll, but I will pay tribute to Harry Potter in my own way. Thank you, for the memories, the adventures, everything. This may be goodbye, but I will never forget. Mischief Managed.
